Tool Maker Apprentice

Office: Tegra Medical - Franklin
Location: MA

o be fully engaged in the following 8000-hour hands-on training program. The program is approved by the Department of Apprenticeship Standards which is governed by the State of Massachusetts. Due to the significant investment by Tegra Medical and the selected individual, a letter of understanding will be drawn up and signed by both parties.

Training will be performed with the assistance of trained Tool Makers, Engineers, Operators, and Local Colleges, and Tooling U. Training will utilize the various operations performed in Production as they pertain to training value. All required college courses will be taken outside of normal working hours and paid for as outlined in the Tegra Medical tuition reimbursement program.

The Tool Maker Apprentice will be responsible for setting up and operating CNC, conventional, and special-purpose machines to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts. Extensive knowledge of materials and processes used in the Medical Device Component industry. Possess a mastery of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, and layout techniques. Work with Toolmaker Mentors as well as the Engineering group as a technical resource for the development of prototype tooling, fixturing, automation, and new part process development.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Read blueprint and job order for product specifications and tooling instructions such as dimensions, tolerances, and number of parts to be processed.
  • Measure and mark dimensions and reference points on materials or workpiece as a guide for subsequent machining.
  • Assist in verifying dimensions of finished work piece for conformance to specifications using optical comparator, gage blocks and gage pins.
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials on the machine.
  • Start and observe the operation of the machine to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjust machine controls as needed.
  • Perform inspections to verify conformance of finished workpiece to specifications using precision measuring instruments.
  • Perform required daily maintenance to equipment and tools.
  • Communicate with co-workers, members of other shifts, technical leader, team leader, Engineering and/or supervisor to transfer and receive instructions and information as well as coordinate activities regarding the status of the operation of jobs.
  • Will perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Assist Tool Makers in implementing continuous improvement activities.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Must be willing to enroll in College Level courses as applicable to an Associate Degree program:

General Math, Tech Math I, Tech Math II, Tech Math III, Blueprint Reading I, Blueprint Reading II, Hydraulics I, Hydraulics II, Jigs & Fixtures I, Jigs & Fixtures II, Physics & Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Manufacturing Processes, Tool Design, Speeds, Feeds, & Gearing, Basic Plastics, Basic Injection Mold Design, Drafting I, Metallurgy, Precision Instruments, Electricity. To be worked out with your Mentor\Manager. Technical High School Diploma Machine Shop Major highly desired or experience all around machinist, basic math, and mechanical aptitude.

Hours of Work: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM must be flexible based on training availability.

A four-year employment commitment to Tegra Medical after program completion is expected."
